So, the New York Times is reporting that General Patreaus has told GWB that troop withdrawals shouldn't be considered for another six months, and that a scale back to pre-escallation levels is what should be considered when it's considered. Can't say I expected anything different.  Stay the course.  Making progress.

The Economist seems to have read the tea leaves.  They have an article entitled Recession alert this week.  None of it is news if you've been paying attention.  It's just that it's becoming obvious that the recession is baked into the economy.

That's about it today.

Also, plastic jugs of water. If you make your own by filling in empty bottles with tap water, put in a few drops of bleach to help retard the growth of microorganisms.

Can I ask a serious question? by Gedvondur (4.00 / 1) #7 Mon Sep 10, 2007 at 03:11:07 PM EST
You have sent out 138 resumes.....Have you made a 138 phone calls to follow up on progress?

If you are not following up on the phone, you are going to have limited success.  I offer this as advice, I would like to see you employed, not criticism.

And no, I haven't made 138 phone calls.  I'm following up on the ones that take a nibble.  Once I get a name that's what work on.

Do as you would like, but that's a mistake.  Employers get SO many resumes the only way to stick out is to be memorable for having the initiative to call, IMHO.

The trouble there by jimgon (2.00 / 0) #10 Tue Sep 11, 2007 at 09:47:27 AM EST
Is that I think doing the cold call works for small companies, but doesn't work for the big national and multi-nationals.  Most  of the arrangements in those companies are geared toward not letting people through.

And I'm not trying to be defensive.  Feedback  is what keeps me going.  I can adjust and fix flaws only when someone  points it out.

No problem by Gedvondur (4.00 / 1) #11 Tue Sep 11, 2007 at 09:50:51 AM EST
We are just chatting.  :-)

While you might be right about the big multi-nationals, the HR department does the initial sort, and a good HR department will mention to the hiring manager who stuck out.  If you call, that might be you.

Think of it this way:  It doesn't hurt and it could help so why not?  You've got the time.

Point taken by jimgon (4.00 / 1) #12 Tue Sep 11, 2007 at 09:57:15 AM EST
I'll make adjustments going forward.  I really need the feedback, and I think I shock people (especially in interviews) when I seek it.  I  had an interview last  week  where the manager was pretty frank, and I think I bowled him over in thanking him for it.

And the hiring manager usually only gets the resumes after the HR drones have done the keyword searching on the resumes in all except the smallest of companies. There are exceptions to this, but not many and the number of exceptions is dwindling.

Oh, I don't know by Gedvondur (2.00 / 0) #14 Tue Sep 11, 2007 at 11:48:40 AM EST
I'm not sure that every company's HR department is that brain dead.  Many of them, sure, but not all.  Frankly, I don't think a lot of really successful companies do it that way.  They break their HR functions down farther than that.

Besides, if the company selects its employees with keywords, I wouldn't want to work there anyway.
