each subsequent sequel/prequel tarnishes the original series, he really didn't have to join his two most famous series, they were great on their own.

Have you read any Pynchon? I think you'd get kick out of Vineland, the Crying of Lot 49 is amazing and but tougher (despite it's thin size) if you're into the heavy haul, try Gravity's Rainbow.

i can understand the benefits of a "mental challenge", but when i read for enjoyment, i like to be able to really get into the story. i want to stay up too late because i can't wait to see what happens next. but with anything over 100 years old i'll spend minutes just trying to translate one page into something i can understand, which means i won't even read 20 pages an hour. and i just can't get into a story when i'm reading that slow.
